Ganderbal
Overview
The Gangabal Lake, also called Harmukh Ganga, is an alpine high-altitude oligotrophic lake situated at the foot of Mount Harmukh in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The lake has a maximum length of 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) and maximum width of 1 kilometre (0.62 mi). It is fed by precipitation, glaciers and springs and is home to many species of fish, including the brown trout. Water from the lake outflows into the nearby Nandyal Lake and then into the Sind River via Wangath Nallah. This lake is considered sacred in Hinduism as one of the abodes of Shiva, and Kashmiri Hindus perform an annual pilgrimage to the lake calledHarmukh-Gangabal Yatra.
Weather
Spring (March to May)
During this time, the temperature starts to warm up, and the snow around the lake begins to melt. Daytime temperatures range from 10°C to 20°C. It’s a pleasant season with blooming flowers around the valley, making it an excellent time for trekking. .
Summer (June to August)
Summer is the best season to visit Gangabal Lake as the weather remains pleasant. Temperatures during the day can reach 15°C to 25°C, with cool nights. The clear skies and comfortable weather make it ideal for camping and trekking around the lake. .
Autumn (September to November)
In autumn, the temperature starts to cool down, ranging from 5°C to 15°C. The area surrounding the lake transforms with vibrant autumn foliage, offering a scenic and peaceful experience for visitors.
Winter (December to February)
Winters at Gangabal Lake are extremely cold, with heavy snowfall, and temperatures can drop below 0°C, making the lake and the surrounding region inaccessible for most visitors. Snow covers the area, and trekking becomes difficult during this period.
How to Reach
By Air
The nearest airport is Srinagar International Airport, about 70 km away. You can hire a taxi or use public transport to reach Naranag, which is the starting point for the trek to Gangabal Lake. .
By Road
From Srinagar, travel to Naranag (approximately 50 km away). The drive takes around 2 hours by car or bus. From Naranag, the trek to Gangabal Lake is about 15 km and typically takes 5 to 7 hours.
By Trekking
The main access route to Gangabal Lake is by trekking from Naranag. Longer treks can also start from Sonamarg or Gurez Valley.
Best time to Visit
Spring (March to May)
Weather Pleasant (10°C to 20°C). Ideal for trekking and photography.
Summer (June to August)
Weather Warm (15°C to 25°C). Perfect for outdoor activities like trekking and fishing.
Autumn (September to October)
Weather Cooler (10°C to 20°C). Great for trekking and enjoying autumn colours.
Winter (November to February)
Weather Cold, often below freezing, with heavy snowfall. Not recommended for visiting.
Gangabal has been mentioned in Hindu texts like the Nilamata Purana as well as Rajatarangini. Authors like Walter Roper Lawrence and Francis Younghusband also mentioned Gangabal lake and its association with Hindu rites. In 1519 around 10,000 Kashmiri Brahmans died possibly due to landslides and early snowstorms near Mahlish Meadow during their pilgrimage to Gangabal as they had gone to immerse the ashes of Kashmiri Hindus who were killed by Mir Shams-ud-Din Araqi on the day of Ashura.
