Overview

Wular Lake, also spelled as Wullar, is a vast freshwater lake located in the Bandipora district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. The lake basin was formed due to tectonic movements and is nourished by the Jhelum River. Its size fluctuates seasonally, ranging from 12 to 100 square miles (30 to 260 square kilometers). Wular Lake is one of the six Indian wetlands designated as a Ramsar site, recognizing its ecological significance. However, the lake faces several environmental challenges, including the conversion of large portions of its catchment area into agricultural land, pollution from fertilizers and livestock waste, hunting of waterfowl and migratory birds, and the growth of invasive weeds within the lake. Additionally, the Tulbul Project, a "navigation lock-cum-control structure," is located at the lake's mouth.

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, approximately 69 km away from the lake. From Srinagar, you can take a taxi or local transport to reach Wular. .

The nearest railway station is in Sopore, which is connected to major cities in India. From the railway station, you can hire a cab or take a bus to Wular Lake.

By Road
