Srinagar is the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, known for its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and vibrant culture. Situated on the banks of the Jhelum River, it is famous for its picturesque Dal Lake ,Nigeen Lake, and the iconic houseboats and shikaras (traditional wooden boats). The city is surrounded by the majestic Zabarwan Mountains, offering breathtaking views throughout the year.Srinagar is also known for its Mughal gardens like Shalimar Bagh,  Nishat Bagh, and Chashme Shahi, which showcase traditional Persian-style landscaping. In addition, it has significant historical and religious sites, such as the Hazratbal Shrine and Jamia Masjid.

The weather in Srinagar during October is generally pleasant with cooler post-monsoon autumn temperatures. The average high temperature is around 17.7°C (63.9°F), while the low can drop to about 4.1°C (39.4°F). It’s also one of the driest months, with rainfall averaging 10 mm across about 4.7 days. Humidity is relatively low at 38%, making the air crisp and comfortable. Sunshine lasts for about 8.4 hours a day, and the UV index is moderate at around 3, meaning there’s some risk of sun exposure.

By Air

Srinagar has an airport (Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport) that connects it to major cities in India, including Delhi, Mumbai, and Jammu. Flights are available from various airlines, making air travel one of the most convenient options.

By Train

The nearest major railway station to Srinagar is in Jammu (Jammu Tawi Railway Station), located about 270 kilometres away. From Jammu, you can hire a taxi or take a bus to reach Srinagar. The journey from Jammu to Srinagar takes approximately 6-8 hours by road.

By Road

Srinagar is well-connected by road to various cities in India, including Jammu, Delhi, and Manali. You can take a bus or hire a taxi from nearby cities. The National Highway 44 (NH44) is the main route leading to Srinagar.

By Bus

State-run and private buses operate regular services from major cities like Jammu, Delhi, and Amritsar to Srinagar. The journey offers scenic views of the mountains and valleys.

By Car

If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car from nearby cities. The roads to Srinagar are generally well-maintained, but it's essential to check road conditions, especially during the winter months when snowfall can affect travel.

Best time to visit

 

Spring (March to early May):

This is one of the most beautiful times to visit Srinagar, especially in April, when the famous Tulip Garden is in full bloom, displaying vibrant colours. The weather is pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 14°C to 21°C, making it ideal for sightseeing and strolling through Srinagar's gardens​

Summer (May to August):

Summer is also a good time for activities on Dal Lake like shikara rides, houseboat stays, and fishing. Temperatures range from 15°C to 30°C, which is warm but manageable. It's a great time for outdoor adventures like hiking and exploring the Mughal Gardens.

Autumn (September to November):

Many consider autumn the best time to visit Srinagar due to the stunning transformation of the landscape. The famous Chinar trees turn golden, and the temperatures cool to between 5°C and 25°C, offering a picturesque and tranquil environment.

 

Winter (December to February):

If you enjoy snow, winter is ideal, especially for snow sports and enjoying the winter beauty of the Kashmir Valley. Temperatures can drop to -2°C to 6°C, and there is regular snowfall, particularly in December and January, making it perfect for winter sports​.

History

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir, is the largest city in the Indian-administered union territory. Situated in the Kashmir Valley along the Jhelum River, and flanked by Dal and Anchar Lakes, it is renowned for its stunning landscapes, gardens, and houseboats.
