Nigeen Lake

Overview

Nigeen Lake, also spelled Nageen Lake, is a mildly eutrophic lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir, India. Often considered part of Dal Lake, it connects to it via a narrow strait and links to Khushal Sar and Gil Sar lakes through Nallah Amir Khan. Surrounded by willow and poplar trees, Nigeen Lake is referred to as "nageena," meaning "the jewel in the ring." Known for its pristine waters, it attracts tourists with houseboats and shikaras and offers swimming opportunities. The colonial-era Nigeen Club is located on its eastern shore, with Hari Parbat hillock to the west and localities like Baghwanpora, Lal Bazar, and Hazratbal nearby, the latter known for the Hazratbal Shrine.

Autumn (September to November)

Winter (December to February):

Winters can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to between -2°C and 10°C (28°F to 50°F). The area may experience snowfall, creating a picturesque winter landscape around the lake. This season is quieter in terms of tourism.

How to reach

By Air

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (Srinagar Airport), approximately 20 kilometres from Nigeen Lake. You can hire a taxi or use ride-sharing services from the airport to the lake.

By Train

The closest major railway station is in Jammu, about 270 kilometres away. From Jammu, you can take a taxi or a bus to reach Srinagar and then head to Nigeen Lake.

By Road 

Nigeen Lake is well-connected by road. You can hire a taxi, use local auto-rickshaws, or take a bus from various parts of Srinagar. The lake is situated near the eastern shore of Dal Lake, making it easily accessible.

If you are staying near Dal Lake, Nigeen Lake is within walking distance. You can enjoy a pleasant walk along the shores of Dal Lake to reach Nigeen Lake.
