Hamza Makhdoom

Overview

Hamza Makhdoom, popularly known as Makhdoom Sahib (c. 1494 – c. 1576), was a Sufi mystic living in Kashmir. He is sometimes referred to as Mehboob-ul-Alam (literally, "beloved of the world") and Sultan-ul-Arifeen (literally, "king among those who know God").

How to reach

By Road  

The shrine is located on the southern slope of Hari Parbat Hill in Srinagar. You can reach it by taking a local taxi or private car from anywhere in Srinagar city. The route is well-connected, and there are signs directing visitors toward the shrine. Be prepared for a short climb, as there are about 100 stairs leading up to the shrine.

By Air 

The nearest airport is Sheikh Ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, around 16 km from the shrine. From the airport, you can take a taxi or rental car to reach the site.

By Car  

You can drive directly to the shrine if you have a private vehicle. There are parking facilities available at the base of Hari Parbat Hill.

Best time to visit

The best time to visit the Hamza Makhdoom Shrine in Srinagar is throughout the year, although it holds special significance during Islamic holy months, attracting larger gatherings. Visitors can enjoy a peaceful experience while appreciating the beautiful views of Dal Lake and the city from the shrine's location on Hari Parbat hill. For more moderate weather, visiting between April and October is ideal, as Srinagar experiences mild temperatures during these months.

The Hamza Makhdoom Shrine, also known as Makhdoom Sahib, has a rich historical background. It is dedicated to the 16th-century Sufi saint Sheikh Hamza Makhdoom, who passed away around 1576. Situated on the southern slope of Hari Parbat hill in Srinagar, the shrine has become a significant spiritual site for devotees. After Sheikh Hamza's death, his funeral prayer was led by his close associate, Tahir Rafique, and the shrine was constructed near Hari Parbat, where he was laid to rest. This location, historically important, has been a pilgrimage site where people seek blessings​.
