How to Reach

By Air

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (Srinagar), around 55 km from Baramulla. Taxis and buses are available for the journey from Srinagar to Baramulla. .

By Train

Baramulla has its own railway station, connected to Srinagar, Anantnag, and Qazigund. A scenic train journey through the Kashmir Valley is a popular way to reach Baramulla.

By Road

Baramulla is well-connected by road, with buses and taxis available from Srinagar (1-2 hours’ drive). It is also accessible via National Highway 1D, which connects the region to other parts of Jammu and Kashmir.

Best time to Visit

 

The best time to visit Baramulla is during the summer months (April to October), when the weather is pleasant for outdoor activities and sightseeing. For those interested in snow sports, the winter months (December to February) are ideal, especially for skiing in Gulmarg. Autumn (September and October) is another excellent time to visit, as the landscapes transform with the beautiful fall colors.

 

History

Baramulla district was founded by Raja Bhimsina in 2306 BC and has long served as a gateway to the Kashmir Valley, strategically located on the route from Muzaffarabad and Rawalpindi. The district attracted notable visitors, including the famous Chinese traveler Xuanzang and British historian Moorcraft. The Mughal emperors were particularly drawn to Baramulla; Emperor Akbar passed through in 1586 AD, and Jahangir visited in 1620 AD. In the 15th century, Syed Janbaz Wali, a revered Muslim saint, chose Baramulla as the center of his mission, and his shrine remains a significant pilgrimage site. The district also hosted Guru Hargobind, the sixth Sikh Guru, in 1620 AD, making it a symbol of religious harmony. Baramulla remained an important district in Kashmir until 27 October 1947, when it became part of India after the Maharaja signed the Instrument of Accession. In recent years, Baramulla has seen significant development, with improved infrastructure, better educational facilities, and railway connectivity to key regions, including Srinagar, Anantnag, and Qazigund.
