Weather

 

Summer (May to September) 

Daytime temperatures range from 12°C to 25°C, making it a pleasant time to visit.The valley is lush and green, ideal for trekking and outdoor activities. Summer is considered the best season for tourists.

 

Autumn (October to November)

Cooler than summer, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 20°C. The valley transforms into a picturesque landscape with vibrant fall colors.

 

Winter (December to February)

Can drop to -10°C or lower at night, while daytime temperatures stay around 0°C to 10°C. The valley is snow-covered, turning it into a winter wonderland, perfect for snow-based activities like skiing.

 

Spring (March to April)

Ranges between 10°C to 20°C. The valley starts to bloom with flowers and new vegetation, marking the onset of the trekking season. This climate makes Aru Valley a year-round destination, although the best times to visit are during summer and spring for trekking and sightseeing.

 

How to reach 

 

By Air

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, about 110 kilometres away. From the airport, taxis or shared cabs can take you to Pahalgam, approximately a 2.5 to 3-hour drive. Aru Valley is 12 kilometres from Pahalgam.’

By Train

The closest major railway station is Jammu Tawi, around 270 kilometres from Aru Valley. From Jammu, you can take a taxi or bus to Pahalgam, which takes about 7 to 8 hours.

By Car

Driving is an option via National Highway 44 (NH 44) from Jammu to Srinagar, then continuing to Pahalgam. The road conditions are generally good, but checking for updates is recommended, especially in winter.

 

Best Time to Visit

Summer (April to June)

Ideal for  Trekking, sightseeing, outdoor activities. Weather is Pleasant and mild, with temperatures ranging between 12°C and 25°C. The valley is lush green, with blooming flowers and clear skies, making it perfect for adventure activities like trekking and camping. It is the most popular time for tourists.

Monsoon (July to September)

Ideal for Travelers who enjoy quieter trips. Weather is Moderate rainfall, with temperatures around 10°C to 20°C. While the valley looks beautiful after rains, with misty surroundings and fresh greenery, travel could be disrupted due to landslides or road conditions, making it less suitable for adventure activities.

Autumn (September to November)

Ideal for Nature lovers and photographers. Weather is  Cool, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 15°C. The valley transforms with vibrant autumn colors, particularly with Chinar trees turning golden. It's a serene time to visit, with fewer crowds and stunning landscapes.

Winter (November to March)

Ideal for Skiing and snow activities. Weather is Cold, with temperatures dropping to sub-zero levels. The valley is covered in snow, making it an excellent time for skiing, snow trekking, and enjoying the winter beauty. However, the cold can be intense, and accessibility may be limited due to snow-covered roads.

 

History

Aru Valley, located around 12 kilometres from Pahalgam in the Anantnag district of Kashmir, has historically been known for its pristine beauty and as a base for trekking and adventure activities. The valley is closely linked to the nomadic Gujjar and Bakarwal tribes, who have long used the region's lush meadows for grazing their livestock. Over time, it became a favoured retreat for travellers seeking peace and scenic views. The valley gained more prominence in modern times, especially with the rise of tourism in Kashmir. In the early to mid-20th century, it became a popular stopover for trekkers heading towards the Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar Marsar lakes. Aru’s significance as a trekking hub has only grown, especially since these treks offer some of the most breathtaking views in the Kashmir Valley
